Affiliate Disclosure

AF_BlogHeader_03-12-15_DisclosurePolicyThe Federal Trade Commission has certain policies on digital advertising and affiliate disclosures. While we encourage you to read the full article, here is a brief summary of the points that might affect you as an affiliate:

• You must disclose if you received a product for free to review.

• You must disclose if you received compensation in exchange for a review or testimonial.

• You must disclose if you are using an affiliate link in conjunction with a review or recommendation.

Creating your disclosure is extremely important as an affiliate. Not only does it help build a good relationship with your followers, but if you are not complying with the Federal Trade Commission policies, you can be fined! Below we provide you with easy to implement ideas and suggestions to comply with the laws:

Bloggers

Implementing your disclosure for your blog is simple. Follow these easy steps to be on your way:

1. Create a Disclosure Policy page or post on your blog. This should include your personal policies on advertising, affiliate links, press samples, etc.

2. Disclose specific posts by including a disclaimer in your blog post:

Disclaimer: The above _________ (enter company(s) name) link is an affiliate link. The _______ (enter relevant products) were sent to me for review. This video is (or is not), sponsored by any of the companies mentioned.

OR:  Save these disclosure buttons that we created for you to use! affiliate_buttons02affiliate_buttons01 affiliate_buttons03Use the relevant buttons and place them at the BEGINNING of the blog post. It is also good to place them underneath any product pictures. Make sure to hyperlink each of the buttons back to your main Disclosure Policy page.

Here is a quick breakdown of the buttons: affiliate_buttons02This button should be used for any post that contains an affiliate link. affiliate_buttons03This button should be used for any post that contains products that you received for free.

affiliate_buttons01This button can be used for posts where there is nothing to disclose. In other words, your post contains no affiliate links, no complimentary products were received and no compensation was made in exchange for the post.

YouTube

For those of you with YouTube channels, you will also need to disclose the above information in your video description box. If you use an affiliate link in the description box, you need to inform your followers that it is an affiliate link. The same goes for letting them know if it is a sponsored video or if you received the product for free. Here is a sample disclosure that you can modify to fit your needs:

Disclaimer: The above _________ (enter company(s) name) link is an affiliate link. The _______ (enter relevant products) were sent to me for review. This video is (or is not), sponsored by any of the companies mentioned.
